A New Gift for Our Most Generous Supporters: Stunning Theodore C. Ewen Print

The SS United States Conservancy is always looking for ways to give back to our supporters, who give so generously to ensure that we can continue our vital work to save America's Flagship.

We are excited to announce that moving forward, donors at the SS United States Benefactor level and above will receive a limited-edition print of artist Theodore C. Ewen's remarkable "Moonlight on the North Atlantic" painting.

"Moonlight on the North Atlantic" by Theodore C. Ewen.

This gorgeous depiction of the Big U was generously donated by Ewen's daughters, Stephanie and Deborah Ewen. SS United States designer William Francis Gibbs deeply admired Ewen, a renowned maritime artist and Gibbs & Cox employee. Gibbs selected "Moonlight on the North Atlantic" for his 1954 Christmas card.

"My sister and I grew up hearing wonderful stories related to our father's work at Gibbs & Cox," Stephanie Ewen said.

Stephanie and Deborah Ewen present a print of "Moonlight on the North Atlantic" to Conservancy Executive Director, Susan Gibbs, following a presentation by Gibbs at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, RI.

Theodore "Ted" C. Ewen was a Pratt Institute graduate, a World War II Naval Officer, and a lifelong sailor, artist, yacht builder and marine designer. His paintings often graced the covers of Rudder, Motor Boating and Yachting Magazines and others are held in private and family collections. He worked with designers and yacht yards including Consolidated Yacht Yard in City Island, NY and with Bill Luders at the Luders Yacht Yard in Stamford, CT. In the 1950’s and 1960’s he worked for Gibbs & Cox in New York City, first as a design consultant and subsequently as an employee in the design department.

The Conservancy is profoundly grateful to Stephanie and Deborah Ewen for sharing their father's incredible work and supporting our efforts to save the SS United States!

The SS United States has always been a soaring symbol of ingenuity, innovation, and the nation's ability to join arm-in-arm to advance common goals. Become a member of the SS United States Conservancy, and help us save the Big U!
